Sunset at Stanton Drew - 16 Feb 2008

This page includes photographs from an evening visit to the Stanton Drew stone circles on Saturday 16 February 2008. As I had witnessed the start of the solar week there on Sunday 10 February, it seemed a good idea to see the solar week out at the same site. Again and again the sun appeared as the Druid Awen three stroke symbol. The photographs are shown in the order they were taken. Stanton Drew is not quite level and so the sun appeared at different levels as I walked around the field. The verses of poetry are further extracts from my forthcoming 17-verse poem about the site. A video reading of this will be available in due course.

Sunset In The Three Circles

"The Stanton Drew stone circles
A hidden Somerset treasure
Not just a pile of old rocks
The purpose found with simple measure"

"1,500 years to create the monument
Work began in 3,000 BCE
Earthen, wooden and then stone
Astronomical alignment was always key"

"A centre line through South West and Great
And on to Hautville's Quoit North East
The mid-summer sunrise point 2000BCE
A sign of the coming harvest feast"

"A centre line through Great and North East
With the Cove as an extension
The 5,000 year-old mid-winter sunset
Ploughing and planting and the sun's ascension"

"A third alignment also exists
Through a line at the edge of all three
Pointing to the southernmost moonset
Tangent lines are something we often see"

The 79% Complete Waxing Moon

"Christians may have worshipped here
Long before their church was built
But locals smashed the stones
Seemingly with no guilt"

Dusk at The Cove

"Termed The Wedding by John Aubrey
The cove as Bride, Bridegroom and Priest
The others fiddlers and maids
Turned to stone and never released"
