Introduction

The Goddess Conference in Glastonbury is now in its 18th year. This year the theme was the Great Earth Mother, with colours of orange and brown. I attended several of its events during my busy Lammas period. The first was a Bridget workshop on the fringe with Marianne on 29 July. This report covers the other activities - the Lammas Fire on the night of 31 July and the Procession and Fruit Feast on 4 August. This report is also the home of the montages that cover the complete experience. The same pictures are also included on Facebook for tagging, although they lose some of their quality there.

Video Links

A half hour video is available from the procession on the final day . Processional videos back to 2008 are also still available. Thanks to mikesey for doing these.

Goddess Temple Lammas Celebration and Goddess Conference Fire (31 Jul 2013)

In a fairly late change the Goddess Temple Lammas Celebration was combined and Goddess Conference Fire on the night of 31 July. A group met outside the Town Hall and set off at 19:30, led by the Earth Priestesses. The procession headed up the High Street and then into Silver Street. Crossing Chilkwell Street the group moved into Dod Lane and then the site of the fire at Bushy Coombe. Everyone formed up around the previously-assembled wood mound. This was completely circled by small Goddess figures. Joanne welcomed everyone to this Lammas fire celebration. The wheel was opened by the Earth Priestesses, starting with Joanne. The group turned around to see nine other priestesses travelling towards them with fire torches. They entered the circle and used their torches to light the main fire, leaving the sticks in the fire and laying them on the ground. With the fire soon well alight, the group chanted and sang songs. Everyone had a chance to cast herbs into the fire. There was also dancing and fire performances. By 22:30 the area was dark but the fire continued to burn bright. A pathway back to the road was lit with glow sticks and people started to drift away. It had been an amazing fire but there was a concern over future years. This location has been used for the conference fire for many years. Now it’s up for sale. Below are photos showing the complete event, with additional coverage in the montage section lower down.

Goddess Conference Procession and Fruit Feast (4 Aug 2012)

The traditional Goddess Conference Procession and Fruit Feast was scheduled for 4 August. A large group met outside the Town Hall and set off soon after 10:00. The weather was forecast to be variable and so it was important to get away on time - and at a rather brisk pace! After heading up the High Street the group moved into Bove Town. Once in Wick Hollow the procession stopped at the famous large tree with exposed roots. With everyone as close as they could be, Michelle taught the group a chant:

Sing, sing, sing to the trees
Sing to the flowers
Sing to the leaves

Sing, sing, sing to the trees
Sing to the flowers
Sing to the leaves

Sing to the wheel that's turning
Sing to the earth in my hands
Sing to the ancient pathways
Sing to the pulse of the land

This tree was then honoured for a few minutes with these words. The procession moved on again and headed into Bulwarks Lane, honouring several more trees along the way. Arriving at a field above Chalice Hill, the farmer was on hand to provide access and to give safety advice. The field contained cows, calves and a bull and the sudden arrival of several hundred people wearing orange and waving flags could cause alarm! There is no public access to this field. The trees in this field were also honoured and the group ended up in a cathedral of trees, looking down over Glastonbury. Some additional songs were sung at this stage. It was then time for the Fruit Feast. This was laid out on the ground and the priestesses each blessed an aspect of this in their direction. After a short period of eating the group made its way down over Chalice Hill. One final opportunity was taken to sing to the trees at the entrance to Chalice Hill. Then it was back the way we had travelled, returning to the Town Hall. The weather had been relatively kind after all. Below are photos showing the complete event, with additional coverage in the montage section lower down.
